Let's be honest, all the hobbity shit in the LOTR were the worst bits of the films.

A whole film about Hobbits and dwarves will be shit, hopefully it wont get made :P

tbh it could have been pretty good, with a nice big ending battle plenty of dead dwarves and a dragon thrown into the mix, but without Jackson and his understanding of all things Tolkien then it will no doubt be tosh..

Couldn't have said it better. Just like the Matrix the first film was good, then the next 2 utter shite.

The fact I posted probably suggests I care. They were probably alittle to long for you older men I mean what without toilet breaks and stuff how could you get through it :p

Aside from that Jackson did a very good adaptation of the books and the extrascenes fitted in on the DvD added most of the little bits that were missing. Parts of it annoyed me, Legolas boarding down the stairs, the Elephant scene, but on a whole he portrayed the 3 books in a magnificent fashion.

Have you actually read the Hobbit? It is one of the greatest books ever, with far more going on in it than just a whining hobbit.

Yeah I read it when I was a kid (just after Tolkien wrote it :P), absolutely loved it back then.

I enjoyed the films but all the hobbity shite did bore me, and I fucking hate dwarves, always have, always will. For me, dwarves are the worst things about any fantasy writing or films or games or whatever. To give them Jock accents fucks me off even more. A film that has all the central characters (bar Gandalf) as either fucking hobbits or fucking dwarves will just do my head in.
And Tolkein gave them shit names too :P

Cant someone make a film out of some of the other great fantasy works out there?? There is soooo much source material - and much of it has no dwarves or hobbits at all.

I've read... a lot of fantasy books. The Hobbit is not, as far as I'm concerned, "one of the greatest books ever" - and Tolkien is not "the best fantasy author ever" either. Peter Jackson gave us a shitload of flashy effects, awesome renditions of the world, and shite story. FFS, the two last movies are all about walking (almost like the books zomg), and some random whining from either a dwarf or a hobbit.

Now, don't get me wrong here. I don't think the books are bad - I just don't think they're the best (or even close). The Hobbit is far better than the LotR books, but it's still not the best - and it still contains a whiny hobbit, as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, and FYI: don't ever ask "have you read [book]" again - chances are I have. Several times, at that. I did spend most of my school life reading books (it was either that or the usual afternoon beating by the other school kids). ;)

have to say that i agree with cal here, i love the LotR series and think the books are amazingly well written, imo anyone who says the second books are all about "walking and whinging" is very short sighted, they say a lot about natural beauty and the ficklety of mankind - all good messages imo.

also think the films are amazingly well made and good renditions of the books and cant see any valid reason to dislike the 2nd and 3rd parts as i think the cinematography and detail in them is fantastic, and being a true tolkein geek, having watched the extras on the dvd's think the attention to detail which they put into it is mindblowing. i think its a real shame that the hobbit isnt going to be made by jackson as he is clearly a very talented director and the hobbit could be a really good film if his team were making it.

The hobbits and 'my preciouuuusss' were my least favorite parts
of the lotr films, I loved the huge battles and the nazguls.
Never read the books, only really read 'of mice and men' that
I can remember :p

Not trying to godify Jackson, but that's probably the worst decision
this year. Not even sure what the story behind The hobbit is, but
unless it has some mean action scenes I doubt I'll watch it.
Or if I get bored..

Was going through some webspace couple of days ago,
still had a pic of delta's face I photoshopped on Gandalf :p

I wonder how Jackson does with Halo, should be fun

I read somewhere yesterday that Halo the movie has been shelved for a while due to escalating costs.

They rocked!

Bad Taste - the film that took 7 years to make and changes plot half way through cos his lead actor moved away and couldn't finish the project!

I'm a big LOTR fan but the films (whilst epic masterpieces) reminded me of a couple of things

1.) Tolkein wrote books that were as much encylopedias of middle earth as they were a story

2.) God I hated all the fiddle dee dee bullshit and the stupid songs.

The films had phenomenal aspects to them but I just found them too long. 3.5 hours in an uncomfortable seat is enough to turn you off any film

M

Cal told me they were his favourite bits since he got into roleplaying in a big way, I'm just hoping he doesn't come to the BBQ next year else I'll throw his velvet cloak on the BBQ mesen ;)
