My brother is looking to get broadband (ADSL) and I wanted to know if anyone has any views about companies to avoid or seek out.

Ultimately he wants to play games and download, so no download limit is quite important.

I was thinking of plusnet, but I think they've enforced a download limit.

Thanks

Neil

Freedom2Surf or Eclipse

Both are the pricier end of the market but tbh I wish I had gone with one of those two.

If ALL he wants to do is surf and game then the p[lus.net £15 pm adsl is fine otherwise I would recommend he check out the two above suppliers.

Freedom to Surf are the only totally uncapped provider in the country - you can download as much as you like. Having said that I suspect that download tarrifs will hit all isp's sooner or later - p2p traffic can simply eat up the bandwidth you purchase.

Check out the adsl guide site that Sift posted - you can compare multiple providers by user experience. Eclipse and Freedom2Surf always come out high - very high.

I used to have freedom2Surf, put me off ADSL all together, it was a few years ago mind but their software caused frequent crashes, we used a 2k box at first which needed a reboot every 2 hours, a brand new xp box would crash everyday evntually we settled on a linux box and that only lasted about 3 days without crashing. They're the reason I'm still happy with NTL only had 2 problems with them, had hundreds with Freedom2Surf.

But have been bought by NTL who do have limits. Something will have to change as I can't see them having some people with no limit and others with one.

I've been with NTL for 8 years. Never hit a limit. There again, I wouldn't recommend them either. When it's working it's great. When it's not, the service is shite.

Limits were only imposed with the recent upgrade and won't really be enforced until the end of the year or so.
